Selection criteria for choosing a microwave oven

Dimensions and capacity of the microwave oven

Depending on how your kitchen is configured, your microwave oven will probably sit in a designated cabinet or directly on the counter. In both cases, it is crucial to measure the space available for the unit, both the headroom and the width and depth of the counter or shelf. Also think about the door clearance!

Most microwaves will hold a standard plate without a problem, but if your dishes are larger than average or of a particular shape, it's best to measure them also to make sure they will fit with the door closed. You can even bring a plate to the store!

Type of microwave oven

There are three types of microwave ovens to choose from. The traditional model offers the warmer with variable power and a timer to set the appropriate time. It is the most affordable on the market and will meet 90% of the needs of a Quebec family.

There is also a version with a grill for browning a pizza, for example, or for grating cheese for your pasta. It is not a small oven, but this model has some similar features.

Finally, the third type of microwave on the market is the combo, which is a traditional microwave paired with a small oven. Thanks to the oven's resistors and the microwave's rotating heat, you will be able to prepare and reheat your dishes with ease.

Power and volume of the microwave oven

Most microwaves sold offer similar capabilities in terms of power if you're just heating up food. The power is calculated in watts, generally in three groups: 700–900 W, 800–1000 and 900–1200 W.

The settings range from 1 to 10: 1 being 10% of the total power of the microwave and 10 being 100%. The smaller the volume of your microwave, the less powerful it will be. A model of 23 litres or less will suit one- or two-person households, while large families will opt for a model of 24 to 30 litres. Larger users will choose 31 litres and more, also depending on the size of their space.

Microwave oven door type

Microwave doors always open sideways, i.e., from right to left or from left to right. Neither option is better than the other, as it depends on the layout of your kitchen. How do you prefer to put your bowls and plates in and take them out, based on how your cabinets and countertops are configured?

Microwave oven tray

Vérifiez le plateau du four à micro-ondes qui a une taille entre 27 et 40 centimètres. Peut-il être facilement retiré pour le nettoyage? Est-il possible d’en arrêter la rotation si l’on insère un plat carré, par exemple?

Functions and programming of the microwave oven

In addition to the traditional microwave functions, you may appreciate a few different programs offered for some models. For instance, think about popcorn that often ends up burned. A pre-programmed cooking cycle will work perfectly for golden kernels!

If you tend to use your microwave to warm up your coffee or for short periods, a pre-programmed quick button lasting a few dozen seconds will save you time.

The automatic defrost or bread defrost function will ensure that food thaws without you having to constantly monitor what is happening, as will the humidity sensor that prevents overcooking.

Colour and finish

More of an aesthetic choice, the colour and the matte or glossy finish of your microwave will be based on the look of your kitchen and your other appliances, but also the choices available according to the desired volume and power. Black, white and stainless steel are the most common microwave colours.

Energy consumption

Using a microwave oven instead of a traditional oven is an energy saver in itself, since it consumes 1000 watts compared to 5000 for the larger appliance. In any case, choose a model that is Energy Star® certified so it uses less energy!
